Discover

When the apple fell, Newton got an idea. He discovered gravity. But gravity existed all along. Newton only uncovered it and gave it a mathematical formula.

Galileo invented the telescope but when he saw Venus and Jupiter and its moons, they were simply discovered. They existed all along. He only gave them names and told us how small or big they were.

I often feel that when creatives create, they aren’t really creating anything. They are credited with it, but the actual act of creation at its best feels like a process of discovery rather than invention.

Whether it be a story, or music, or a painting or a sculpture. It is already there. All you need to do is to discover it. Like when they say that an author needs to discover his voice, it is actually true. If it is not his voice, if he is not true to it, the writing feels manufactured. And the reader can make out.

The best creations are uncovered. They are not created. They are already there. All a creative needs to do is discover.
